Description

This 2011 Keystone Montana 2955RL is a great fifth wheel for anyone seeking to travel the country full time! Montanas, especially from this era, are known for their quality build and are very popular for DIYers who want to remodel (check out the early work by theflippingnomad for examples). We lived in this RV for 2.5 years before settling down and downsizing to a van. It served us well and was especially great for boondocking!

Here are some quick specs:

Overall length: 333

Dry weight: 10,377 lbs

Carry capacity: 3378 lbs

Fresh water: 66 gal

Gray water: 93 gal (split between two tanks - kitchen and shower)

Black tank: 50 gal

Propane: 60 lbs (two removable tanks)

Hot Water: 12 gal, propane or electric

**INTERIOR**

This is a rear-living layout with a large back window which is amazing for taking in the views while you are relaxing inside. There's reasonable counter space, a 3 burner stove, a microwave, and a dual propane/electric fridge and freezer. There's a great amount of storage in the kitchen, and we added an additional pantry area with 4 drawers for even more storage space. The drawers occupy the cabinet that could otherwise hold a washer and dryer, and there are water/sewer connections if you wanted to add a that instead. There's a 15,000 BTU air conditioner in the living room ceiling as well.

The bedroom is separated by a sliding door which is great for couples working on the road. There's space for a normal-size Queen mattress (not included since we know most people replace them anyway), a large wardrobe, and a decently-sized set of drawers. There's also a large storage area in the front that could either hold more clothes, or large, bulky items (we kept our inflatable paddleboard in there). There's a Maxxair 7000k vent fan with automatic lid, thermostat, and remote. With the windows open, you get great airflow across the bed. Its also pre-wired for a second AC unit, if you need it.

The bathroom is an open layout which makes the room feel much larger! The shower is basically part of the bedroom, but there's a privacy curtain if you need that. The toilet has its own separate room with a powerful vent fan.

**EXTERIOR**

Outside, there's a front storage bay that contains most of the electrical components. There's still space for storage, though. The large pass-through storage space is climate controlled. The system is designed to have the battery stored in this space, but you could change that if desired. We also traveled with cats, so we added an enclosed area in the pass-through for a litter box that the cats can access from inside. If you don't have cats, well remove this for you.

The suspension system is a top-of-the-line MORryde LRE4000 including the upgraded brass wet bolt kit. We boxed in the suspension hangers for additional strength, and we also installed new rubber shear springs in 2019 since the originals were wearing out. We replaced all of the original wheel bearings and bushings in 2021, and we repacked them yearly while traveling full time. The tires are from Sept 2019 and usable but will need to be replaced soon. We know most people feel more comfortable buying wheels themselves versus trusting a previous owner, so we didn't bother replacing them.

**SOLAR AND ELECTRICAL**

The upgraded electrical system is the highlight of this 5th wheel! We intended to boondock full time, so we had a system designed that would support that. There are 950 watts of solar on the roof. We have custom brackets that allow for tilting the panels. They connect to a Victron 100/50 smart solar charge controller. A Victron 3000 watt hybrid inverter/charger powers the entire RV. We installed a soft start on the AC so it can even run that! The whole system can be monitored and controlled from a Victron Color Control GX monitor inside.

The system is designed for a 24v battery. We repurposed the original battery in our new van, so a battery is **NOT INCLUDED** with the system. We will install some low-capacity lead acid batteries for the sale, but you will want to upgrade that I'm sure. We used a Tesla battery from a car originally, and we can include a BMS for that if you want to go that route. Otherwise, it will be very easy to drop in any other battery you might want to use. The RV is functional from 15 amp shore power alone, too, including the slides. Note that the lighting and other DC-powered items inside the RV still utilize 12v, so you don't have to worry about buying any weird 24v components for anything else. Its just the battery/inverter that are 24V, and a 24/12 70A converter powers the rest of the house.

**KNOWN ISSUES**

Finally, the known issues. We lived in this thing for 2.5 years and traveled all over the continent, including driving to Alaska and Baja Sur, and we want you to know about the problems we found but didn't bother fixing.

First up, we think one of the axles isn't properly aligned. It causes uneven wear on the rear drivers side tire. Our solution was to simply rotate the tires more frequently (we aimed for every 2000 ish miles) so that all 4 wear equally unevenly.

Second, the kitchen gray water tank has a crack somewhere. We think that the inlet pipe probably separated/cracked from the top of the tank, but it wasn't accessible to visualize it. If you fill the kitchen gray tank completely full, it will overflow. We were still able to boondock for 14 days at a time without this causing problems, so it wasn't a high priority fix. Dropping the tank requires removing the axles, so both of those issues could probably be fixed by the right shop at the same time. It never felt important enough for us to spend the time to fix, though.

Third, the plastic covering on the underside of the bedroom slide has cracked and broken off. Even in heavy rain, we never noticed any water actually hitting the wood, and we never noticed any water damage anywhere (it would be very easy to see). If you are concerned, it would be pretty easy to paint the area to ensure its sealed.

The awning is powered and works fine, but the material is pretty worn out. It works, but you'll likely want to replace this. Some of the photos also show slide toppers, but these were damaged in a storm and we removed them.

Finally, a couple repairs we wanted to mention. The previous owners had a tire blowout on the passenger side at some point. The entire wheel well was gone when we purchased it. We rebuilt it ourselves using some aluminum flashing, and we haven't had any water intrusion problems. The siding has a small amount of damage behind the wheel well, though. The blowout also damaged the rear stabilizer motor. We simply removed the motor and use the hand crank or a special drill bit (which well include) to lower them.

There was also a soft spot in the roof that we repaired when we purchased it. See the attached photos. It has been solid since with no signs of additional water damage. We inspected all of the roof seals yearly as well.
