Description
2024 Thor Sequence 20K | 80 Days, 16 States, 17 National Parks
Most camper vans are advertised as ready for adventure. This one has already proved it.
We are the original owners. A sabbatical and early retirement gave us the adventure of a lifetime: Around the country in 80 days last summer with our three dogs, from Spokane, Washington to Cherokee, North Carolina and back.
Ram ProMaster 3500 XT High Roof 2WD | 16,857 miles | Sleeps 2, seatbelts for 4 | 21 feet long (22.5 feet with The Shed) | 400 Ah lithium | 3000W inverter | Starlink Gen 3 | Clean title
THE TRIP
It fit in everywhere: national park campgrounds, Harvest Hosts, big-city downtowns, luxury RV resorts, plus free boondocking. And it looks good doing it!
We camped at Arches, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon and Zion, explored Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend and the Grand Canyon North Rim, then ran Route 66 east to Hot Springs, Graceland, Nashville, Mammoth Cave and the Great Smoky Mountains. Coming home we sandboarded at Great Sand Dunes, paddled the Rio Grande near Taos, hit the Roswell UFO Festival, watched the bat flight at Carlsbad Caverns, crossed White Sands and Mesa Verde, and drove the Million Dollar Highway.
The real value was the freedom it gave us between destinations.
Some vans are sold with a promise of adventure. This van comes with proof.
EASY TO DRIVE
It drives like a car. Seriously, it is a joy to drive. At 21 feet on the ProMaster platform it parks more like a full-size van than a motorhome; drive right into the grocery store and park in a standard space. Regular gasoline, so no diesel or DEF.
Ram ProMaster 3500 XT High Roof, 2WD (front-wheel drive), MSRP $141,960
3.6L Pentastar V6, 276 hp / 250 lb-ft, 9-speed automatic
Approximately 15 mpg, 24-gallon fuel tank
3,500 lb towing capacity, hitch installed
Aluminum wheels, invisible front paint protection film
Leatherette swivel captain's chairs that turn to face the living area
Touchscreen dash with CarPlay and Android Auto, back-up camera, cruise control
Heated mirrors, keyless entry, remote start (both keys included)
21 feet long (22.5 with the storage box), 80 inches wide, 9 feet 6 inches tall, 74 inches interior height, 7 inches ground clearance
INTERIOR AND LIVING AREA
The rear lounge converts to the sleeping area in about a minute, and the front chairs swivel around for foot room in bed and extra seating. We looked at A LOT of floorplans; this elusive and sought after "Model 20K" was perfect for us.
Bed 78" x 57". I am 6'3" and 220 lbs and I am perfectly comfortable.
Residential vinyl flooring, soft-touch ceiling
Large roof fan with speed control, and I added a reversing flow switch
LED lighting, Euro-style cabinets with soft-close drawers, ample storage
Two desk spaces for working on the road
Blackout shades, rear door bug screens, and a built-in side entry screen door
KITCHEN
Solid-surface countertop, undermount stainless sink with cover
Greystone portable induction cooktop, plus two exterior outlets for cooking outside
Contoure convection/microwave oven
Vitrifrigo 12V stainless refrigerator, 4.1 cu ft with 1.2 cu ft freezer. Stand-up access, so no searching on your knees for the eggs!
Lagun swing-arm table, pop-up outlets, lots of gear storage
27 gal fresh water, 13.3 gal gray, 13.5 gal black
BATH AND CLIMATE
The enclosed wet bath has a shower, foot-flush toilet and sink, so you are not dependent on campground facilities or roadside bushes. Proper black tank rather than a cassette, plus a power vent, fold-away sink and full-size shower head.
Coleman-Mach 48000 air conditioner, thermostat controlled
Truma Combi Eco Plus water heater and central heat (propane or electric)
Heated holding tanks and three-season insulation
POWER AND CONNECTIVITY
This is where the van separates itself. Many vans in this class ship with lead-acid batteries and a 1000W inverter. This one has 400 Ah of lithium and a 3000W inverter.
Re(Li)able 400 Ah 12V lithium battery system
Mastervolt CombiMaster 3000W inverter/charger, Victron monitoring
Balmar XT 1,920W under-hood generator with auto-start
200W rooftop solar plus an additional 200W portable plug-in panel
BMPRO RVMaster coach control system, 30-amp shore power
USB power everywhere. Charge every device you own simultaneously!
Starlink Gen 3 on switched 12V power, so it does not require the inverter. It works while you are driving, even in the middle of Utah.
Winegard ConnecT 2.0 for Wi-Fi boost, 4G data (with SIM card), and TV
The lithium runs the outlets, lights, refrigerator, water pump and coach systems without shore power. Air conditioning and heat draw far more than everything else combined, which is where the auto-start generator earns its keep.
WHAT WE ADDED
Storage is what most Class B owners run out of first.
"THE SHED" A lightweight aluminum storage box in place of the standard rear bike rack, holding camp chairs, an outdoor rug and a folding table outside the living space, so no pile of gear blocks the bathroom.
"THE GARAGE" Two Overland Vehicle Systems boxes, 234 quarts of secure weather-resistant exterior storage for hiking and fishing gear, dog supplies, helmets and shoes.
Thule power patio awning with LED lighting, roof rack and Thule roof ladder
Your choice of the rear-door storage box or the original Thule bike rack; both convey
A full-size spare tire. Thor shipped this van without one, which we considered unacceptable for a cross-country trip. That is probably why we never needed it.
TRANSFERABLE COVERAGE
