Description
Ultimate Budget Overland Rig?
Available as Truck with Camper together, or just Camper, or even just Truck…
2022 Grumpy Bear Koda truck camper. 100% fiberglass shell exterior. Virtually leak-proof. Designed within a SpaceKap shell built in Canada. Camper is intended for 1/2 ton trucks. It weighs around 1750 lbs. There are 4 electric Happy Jacks with a wireless remote control for easy loading and unloading.
The interior features an extendable “almost” queen bed with brand new mattress in the cab-over area. The bed platform extends and runs length-ways to 74”x58”. There’s a 2-seat dinette (doubles as a small sleeping space for a kid or pet), kitchen area with fridge (12v DC or 120v AC), stainless sink, single burner propane stove, and never used compact microwave (120v AC). Includes 200 watts of roof mounted Renogy solar panels, 2025 model 2000-watt Renogy smart inverter, Renogy charge controller, Renogy battery shunt, and Renogy One Core information touchscreen with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and App capability. There is a propane heater installed and there is also a ducted Air8 Air Conditioner (8,000 BTU) hidden away in a forward cabinet with an electronic thermostat. This air conditioner is super efficient and can even run off the inverter if desired, pulling about 75 amps max. The camper is set up for remote boondocking or overlanding. There’s a fresh water tank (15 gallons), a propane or 120v AC water heater, and a hide-away shower head on the rear door for “outdoor” showers. There is no toilet, though a portable solution could be easily added. There is also a modern Bluetooth stereo installed inside. I would be willing to sell it with the Brophy truck bed tie downs if transferring to your own truck.
Grumpy Bear still makes campers in Ohio but the Koda model is no longer available (buying the Space Kap shells from another manufacturer was just too costly) and thus these units are fairly rare. These are really the ultimate light weight, tough, weather-proof, go-anywhere campers for half tons (or 3/4 tons, too) with 6.5 foot short beds. There are some good articles online if you search “Grumpy Bear Koda Camper” that discuss the design and specs. One good article is on Truck Camper Magazine online.
Camper Alone: $21,900
I’d prefer to sell the camper as a package with my 2004 F150 4x4 truck pictured. It’s a FX4 with the 5.4 Triton V8 rated at 300 HP. It has a clean, accident-free title (Alaska plates—had a house there until recently) in my name ready to sign over. The truck has 207k miles--but less than 30k on a new motor installed by the Ford dealership in 2017—I have all records. It runs, shifts, drives, stops, and handles exactly as it should with no issues, vibrations, engine lights, etc. There are no leaks or drips of any kind. It honestly drives as nice as a new truck. It has an Edge programmer/tuner with a digital interface on the A-post. I just run the “mild” towing tune which gives 15 extra HP. The ability to monitor all the engine and transmission temps and set temp alerts is a very nice feature though. The interior of the truck is almost spotless with front seats reupholstered in 2024. No smells or anything like that. Everything in the truck works as it should and it’s honestly 100% reliable. Recently installed a new Kenwood stereo with wireless Apple CarPlay for navigation, tunes, and a rear view camera—big modern upgrades.
The exterior of the truck is starting to show its age with a few small hail dings, minor door dings, a small ding in the tailgate, etc, but nothing major. The paint is beginning to look poor on the top of the cab and is just 21 years old everywhere else. The truck does have brand new Monroe coil-over shocks on the rear for a tiny extra boost with the camper. A new LED-lighted Raptor-style front grill and a new Hooke Off Road front bumper with LED lighting (all controlled by a new lighting controller in the cab) was recently added. Theres a 4500 lb remote-controlled winch in the bumper. It’s basically made for a big side-by-side Kubota-type ATV—maybe a little light duty if the truck is badly stuck, but ideal for smaller tasks of all sorts, or use a snatch block to get 9,000 lbs of pulling force. There’s also a VHF/UHF 2-way radio installed in the truck. It works as a 2m/440 ham radio, a pretty versatile scanner (including aircraft bands), or transmit and receive on FRS/marine/fire/other frequencies, too. Tires are about 70% Load Range E Cooper A/Ts. The hitch-mounted rear steps are included. The truck has a brand new AGM starting battery as of March 2025 as well as a Noco battery maintainer for long term parking. There are lots of maintenance records on the truck as I’ve owned it the last 11 years.
Truck: $7,900
Truck with Camper Combo: I’d knock off $1000 for a quick easy all-in-one transaction: $28,800 to drive it all away.
Honestly, the truck and camper together are a perfect pair. The rig is 100% ready to roll today for any sorts of adventures, anywhere. It even has a fresh oil change so it’s ready to go. If one wishes to fly-in and drive home, I am happy to help with DFW airport transportation. I would have no hesitation to drive it anywhere on the continent today. The rig is located in Granbury, TX, 30 minutes from Fort Worth or an hour from DFW Airport. Changes in finances force me to sell before I ever got to enjoy it. Reach out with any other questions or for links to a couple articles about the Koda camper.
