This 27’ 77 Airstream and the Lincoln TC which pulled it were used extensively by my parents in the latter 70s through the middle 90s. I can only guess at the miles on the Airstream, because my mother used the Town Car for her everyday driving. The Lincoln had about 200,000 miles on the odometer when I got it. Both vehicles were in Austin, Texas till 1999. I wound up with them after my mother died.

The Airstream and the Lincoln have been in a hanger I built in 2005. Here and there I’ve worked on both the last twenty-two years. My wife and I tried to do a little travel and camping with them, but she is not as adventurous as I, and there were issues with the Lincoln. She is a motel girl.

I took the inside of the trailer apart in about 2004. I cleaned it all, put new carpet in it, had the curtains relined, the outer running lights were changed out, and I did quite a bit of plumbing work. I replaced the hot water heater in 2019 and all the faucet cartridges. The flooring is in great shape as I learned when I replaced the carpet and later when I replaced the water heater. There was no rot under the water heater and little rot to the rest of the flooring. The plumbing is not all original, but it is good. I rebuilt the water lines with compression fittings and pex in order to be taken apart if need be. The Dometic refrigerator will only run on gas. I pulled it out and took it to a repair place, but I was told the electrical side of the system wasn’t able to be fixed. Most of the trailer is in original condition.

The brakes are new as well as the rubber brake lines going to the calipers. It has the original disc brake system, and this is why I suggest anyone desiring the Airstream have their tow vehicle rigged with something to create vacuum. If you have an older vehicle, it will not be a problem. The superiority of the older disc brake system over the newer electric drums is not comparable. The tires on the Airstream are new as well and have less than a thousand miles on them.

Just after replacing the hot water heater I loaned the trailer to a friend who used it for a week vacation. He said the AC did not work. It seemed to be low on freon. When I checked it, it ran cool for me for a little while. I took the shroud off the top and the unit cover to see if it was freezing over. When I turned it on again there was a loud bang then nothing. I have done nothing with it since. The price is firm.
