Description
Six years ago we realized our dream of buying, renovating, and living out of a beautiful vintage 1964 airstream trailer. We named her "Milly". We made amazing memories in Milly but its time to find a good home and pass the baton to someone else.
This trailer is a perfect choice for a:
1. Couple or small family wanting an adventure-mobile that's a step up from car camping without hauling a massive trailer
2. Household that wants to add another flexible living space to their backyard for guests or a college student
3. Store or restaurant wanting to adapt a vintage airstream
Our renovation was focused on five areas:
1. Solid bones: We did not want to invest in a trailer and have the floor collapse (which happens on old trailers)! We replaced the trailer axle which is the hardest and most expensive upgrade. The trailer also had new electrical, a new subfloor, and new insulation. This airstream should last a very, very long time.
2. Deep sleep: We spent 3 months living in this trailer and didn't want to miss out on comfortable sleep so we built a custom queen size bed. With a foam mattress, this bed feels more like sleeping in a hotel than camping.
3. Home Cooking: We wanted to be able to cook on the road so we prioritized a gas stove, lots of storage, large surfaces, and a simple sink.
4. Solar powered: We did not want to rely on trailer parks so we installed a set of solar panels which gave us true independence and freedom on every trip.
5. Open Living space: We decided not to fill up the interior or install a bathroom given that this is such an intimate living space. The open space was helpful for living in a trailer during extended trips.
The good:
- $9000+ worth of renovations
- Solar panels and batteries (with plug-in capability)
- Skylight, blackout curtains
- Several interior outlets, reading lights
- Faucet + sink with electric water pump
- Bamboo flooring
- Custom under-bed storage, queen-sized foam matress
- Gas line to add fridge or heater
- Climate control with a Fantastic Fan
- Painted interior
This trailer is ready to use on day one. We imagine new owners would want to spend $1K-$3k on some basic cosmetic and functional upgrades. For example, one of the cabinet doors scratches the floor when it opens. An exterior latch should be replaced. Doors could be added to a pair of shelves in the kitchen. Baseboard could be added along the perimeter run between the floor and the walls. Would sing with a new coat of paint.
