Description

1985 4x4 Dodge Camper Van (originally a "Getaway" 4x4/Camper Conversion in Canada 1985)

Features/Upgrades:
1. AC system was completely replaced from R12 (bad for environment) with new R134a system requiring new compressor, belts, radiator and hardware.  WORKS GREAT after repairs.
2, Rebuild Transmission (3-speed) with 3-year warranty (built 2016) with NO problems since. work by Cresent Transmission in Los Alamitos.
3. Replaced steering column for better handling.
4. Professionally modded & lifted by Quicksand Rails (Irvine, CA) with:

  • 3" front (over-coil shocks) and new welded control arm.
  • 4" custom leaf springs by Long Beach Springs
  • Chromoly roll cage with ladders and fold-out top platform (9' x 9') for camping perch
  • Chromoly read bumper and swing arm tire/propane mount
  • NOTE: roll cage welded to structural box rails, NOT the sheet metal body.
5. Rebuilt kitchen with 20gal water, electrical converter(s), 3-way propane fridge, space heater.
6. Custom propane gas line system with brass quick-connects for reliable offroading safety.
7. Installed DOMETIC 2-Burner Cooktop/Sink Combo stainless steel.
8. Blow-in rigid foam insulation on inside of body walls and ceiling, 3 inches thick minimum.
9. Bamboo hardwood flooring from Costco.
10. Repurposed front seats (both on swivels) and fold-out rear bench (2nd bed) from 1990s van.
11. Original 4x4 4-wheel drive (Hi and Lo) installed by Getaway Conversion in 1985 professionally.

Outstanding Issues
1. Rust removal and touch-up paint on fold out platform.
2. Engine rings most likely need to be replaced as the engine burns oil. (DOES NOT SMOKE. I simply have just added around a quart of oil per 1000 miles since i started noticing the issue 10+ years ago).
3. The engine hesitates on occasion when climbing steep hills and also after coming off the highway on hot day (95+ degrees outside). The fuel line may need to be replaced.
